Every year, thousands of people across the US make the New Year’s resolution of getting fit. And every year thousands of people join a gym, paying the administration fee and signing up to a twelve month contract only to stop going part-way through the year. This is a scenario seen year after year by many people but this year, there is a new trend, one that you might actually be able to keep – getting fit in the comfort of your own home by turning one room into a home gym.
The thought of turning a room in your home into a home gym sounds difficult and expensive but it needn’t be. The best way to start is to invest in just one piece of large home gym equipment such as a treadmill, an exercise bike, a rowing machine or a cross trainer – whichever you think you will get the most use (and enjoyment) out of initially. After that investment, there are a number of much cheaper fitness accessories that you can buy to help improve your fitness at home. Here are just a few of them.
Fitness mats are a great idea when exercising in your home. Firstly they allow you to work out in a gym-like area without the need for investing in expensive gym-like flooring. A fitness mat will allow you to undertake floor exercises in more comfort than just by lying on your carpet, offering a slightly cushioned surface. A fitness mat will also cushion some impact if you happen to fall whilst exercising. The final advantage of a fitness mat is that you can take it with you should you choose to attend classes outside of the home such as yoga or spinning for example.
A gym ball will make a great addition to any home gym. Gym balls are large, inflatable balls which have been designed to aid your workout. They can be used to offer you support whilst you exercise and will also help you to strengthen your core muscles and increase your balance.
There are a wide range of weights available for your home gym which will help you to build strength whilst working out. Weights work by adding resistance when you work out, making your muscles and your heart work harder. The most popular kind of weights are dumbbells as they allow you to do bicep curls and other exercises to tone and strengthen your muscles. Kettlebells are also very popular hand-held weights. However sometimes you want to keep your hands free whilst you work out so wrist weights are ideal. Wrist weights strap around your wrists, usually with Velcro, and offer the same resistance so dumbbells. Another popular type of weight to use in your home gym are ankle weights. Similar to wrist weights, these strap around your ankles to provide resistance for your muscles whilst you work out.
Another popular fitness accessory which you can use at home is a skipping rope. Skipping is ideal for increasing your heart rate and burning calories. Skipping also offers your body a full muscle workout. Skipping ropes come in a range of different lengths and you need to choose one based on your height. When working out using a skipping rope at home, remember to ensure you have plenty of clear space around you.
By investing in all, or just some of the above fitness accessories, you can really boost your workouts – without ever having to leave the house. Reebok have a great range of fitness accessories available.
