Welcome to Shan’s final MFS Fit Babe Spotlight article lovies! Today’s talk is all about setting your mind right in order to make health & fitness work for YOU & your unique lifestyle! Mind body fitness is all about discovering the key tools that set you up for success on the long run. Let’s hear about Shan’s top “mind fitness” tips…
Mindset is everything when it comes to training. It determines whether you show up, if you put in the effort or just go through the motions, if you enjoy it or not. Our mind is a pretty powerful weapon and ultimately determines our success & if we reach our goals or if we self-sabotage and fail.
Some of my favorite mindset tips that I have picked up along my journey are:
Choose your attitude: you are in control of how you think, train & eat. No-one else. Take responsibility for it. Choose the attitude that you love your body, you want to make it strong & healthy & you want to nourish it.
If you are a busy person (who isn’t?), schedule your training time in your diary & create a routine. We all have the same number of hours in a day, choose to prioritize your health or at some point you will need to prioritize time to be sick because you didn’t look after your body.
Be kind to yourself & swap the word ‘should’ for ‘could’. As in, instead of ‘I SHOULD have gone to the gym this morning’ (*enter negative self-talk and beating yourself up, likely followed by a food binge because ‘we have stuffed it now’), for ‘I COULD have gone to the gym this morning’. The latter is much gentler on our psyche and sometimes a bit of self-kindness is what we need to make sure we get up for the gym tomorrow morning.
Set goals and be clear on what they are and WHY you want to achieve them. Focus on how it will ‘feel’ if you do achieve them. Think about how your life will be better if you are successful in that goal. If the consequence of not achieving them is not strong enough, your motivation will wane and you will be constantly battling yourself.
Get real with yourself & be honest.
Sometimes our body is telling us we need to take a break & we should listen. Sometimes our mind is being lazy & so are we, give yourself an uppercut, write down what your goals are, refocus & get moving. Starting is always the hardest part.
Now get off the computer, put your sneakers on, get moving. Be kind to yourself & your body, it’s the only place you have to live.
