A healthy mindset can sometimes be the biggest challenge on the road to health.
How we perceive the world around us and ourselves can have effects on all aspects of our lives. A holistic approach to health is becoming more and more popular in today’s society. It is a concept that views health as seven different aspects; the goal being to maintain high levels of health and happiness in all areas in order to achieve optimal health.
These aspects include dimensions of spiritual, emotional, social, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and physical health.
Physical & Emotional Health
Lots of times we only concentrate on the physical aspect of health, although this aspect inadvertently affects other aspects it is often not enough to focus solely on physical health. I believe it is important to, each day, make at least one effort to better yourself in all seven of the aspects. By preparing our food for the day we may be working on our emotional strengths, feeling in control of our situation by knowing we are making the right choices. By exercising we are working on the physical aspect which in turn will affect other aspects (see if you can think of any benefits on your own!).
Work can often be a stressor in most people’s lives. We can work on our occupational health by being aware of what causes us stress in the workplace and dealing with it directly by discussing the problem with bosses or supervisors or by taking simple steps like time managing correctly. Building a sense of community in a crowded work place also plays a role in our happiness. Be a good listener, a supportive team member, and give praise where praise is due!
When it comes to the social aspect I think it is important to have a qualitative value attached to your interactions. Yes living an upbeat life going out and “celebrating” every weekend makes you social but it is also important to have social interactions with people around you that reinforce your positive attributes. Put time aside for family, give compliments and once again be a listener!
People define spirituality in their own way so whether that is a religion or simply the idea of being at peace with oneself it is important to be aware of what we deem as our spirituality. Define the term for yourself and analyze what makes you feel at peace, what gives you hope? Sometimes simply being aware of these triggers can allow us to harness their energy in our everyday lives.
Intellectual & Environmental Health
Our intellectual health refers to our readiness to learn and maintaining an open mindset by being able to put our opinions aside and hear what others have to offer. We can continue the learning process daily in many simple ways by reading recent articles on topics of our interest, reading books, or listening to music or watching films we regularly would not choose.
To me intellectual health is about letting go of any resistance we may subconsciously feel to the actively changing world.
We can also practice intellectual health in our quest to achieve environmental health. By simply being aware of new occurrences in the environmental realm of news we can work towards understanding what we can do to live in harmony with our environment.
Holistic health focuses on finding harmony and peace in all aspects of our life, a decline in one aspect may in turn lead to a decline in all aspects.
Listen to yourself, your body, and your environment. Let negative thought wash over you without effect and feel confident in the process of discovering who you are morally and mentally.
