“I don’t workout because I hate my body. I work out because I love my body.”
Fitness cleanses your mind, body, and spirit. It is crucial to your overall well-being. Many doctors even claim that working out is by far the best medicine for your mental and physical health.
If we all know working out only has positive benefits on our life, then why do we struggle with sticking to a workout routine? The answers lie in how we perceive working out. If we perceive working out in a negative way, then we are always going to dread doing any physical activity. The key is to focus on the positive!
“Focus on how you want to FEEL and visualize what you want to look like”
When you workout, you can’t focus on the weight you want to lose or the body you don’t want to have. When you focus on the negative things about yourself, you are attracting more negativity into your life and will always find something you don’t like about yourself (you’ll also dread working out since it puts you in a negative mindset).
Instead when you workout, focus on how you want to FEEL and visualize what you want to look like. Think about positive words like “strong”, “fit”, “brave”, “confident” and don’t let those negative words get any attention!
Aside from thinking about yourself in a positive light, here are 3 easy tools you can implement into your life today to help you stick with your workout regimen:
1. Make a commitment
I figure out when I am going to be able to get my workout in for the next day the night before and once I decide on a time and place, I commit to it. I just got a new job that’s an hour commute, by the time I got home my first week, I was exhausted and had no motivation to leave my house and go workout. I then made the commitment, that if I can’t workout in the morning, I am going to bring my workout clothes with me and go straight from work to the gym. Because I made a commitment to myself and marked it down on my calendar I don’t have to think about it during the day. It helps me stick with the plan.
2. Get a workout buddy
By having a workout buddy, whether it’s your friend, sister, mom, or trainer, you’ll be more likely to stick with your plans to workout. Letting yourself down is one thing, but letting someone else down is a whole other situation. That’s why when you have someone else motivating you and relying on you to be somewhere at a certain time, it helps you stick with your workout plans.
3. Change up your workout routine
Going to the gym everyday and doing 30 minutes on the elliptical is BORING! If this is what you are doing, it’s no wonder you hate working out. Switch up your workout routine to make it interesting and incorporate activities you enjoy doing for fun!
For example, this week my workout plan looks like this:
- Monday: Gym
- Tuesday: Bike ride
- Wednesday: Hot yoga class
- Thursday: 3 mile run outside stopping for bench push ups and step ups
- Friday: Gym
- Saturday: Walk with my dogs
- Sunday: Day off
“The key to getting results quickly, is to visualize you already have them!”
Remember, it’s not about how long you workout, it’s about how well you workout. If you only have 20 minutes to spare, doing interval training can be as effective as an hour cardio workout! If you are super swamped with work this week, make small changes to get in your daily amount of movement. Take the stairs, park as far away as you can in the parking lot, do 20 jumping jacks when waiting for your dinner to cook. Some movement is better than no movement, so don’t give up if you can’t find time to workout for a few days in a row. It’s okay, it’s not the end of the world.
Most importantly, remember the key to getting results quickly, is to visualize you already have them. Always, always, always, think of yourself in a positive light. You are beautiful and strong and worthy of living a life you love. Love yourself enough to live a healthy lifestyle.
