Husbands and boyfriends everywhere fanaticize about that one room where they can do what they want in peace: The Man Cave. This is the area of the home where no uninvited guests can enter, the kids stay away, and men can play all the videogames and watch all of the – sometimes awful – movies they want.
But men aren’t the only ones who seek the freedom of an in-home sanctuary. If you’re a woman who wants to create a stylish and comfortable Woman Cave, then the following four tips will help you get started:
1. Browse the Internet for ideas.
Your Woman Cave may not feature a kegerator and recliner, but you can certainly draw inspiration from popular Man Caves. The Internet is an excellent resource for exploring the options.
For example, CraveOnline.com has a Man Cave design that balances both maturity and guilty pleasures, complete with a recliner, flat-screen television, portable record player, custom poker table and bartending dishes. Pick and choose from these ideas, or window shop on social websites such as Pinterest.
2. Jot down the must-have features of your Woman Cave.
Not every woman has the same taste. The bookworm may want something that looks like Heaven for Maya Angelou – with plenty of hard-covered bliss lining the walls.
The fitness enthusiast, on the other hand, won’t feel like a room is complete without an elliptical machine or free weights. Artsy women will feel right at home with a few ceramic pieces, crotchet needles, or beads and wire for making jewelry.
3. Make it a rule: No kids allowed!
Mothers naturally feel guilty excluding their children from certain activities, and that can work its way into making a Woman Cave into a kid’s playroom. Avoid the battle before it begins: If the Woman Cave is supposed to be a no-kids-allowed sanctuary, then consider creating a Kid Cave at the same time. That way, when mom needs to have some privacy, she can make a game out of it and encourage her child to go into his or her Kid Cave, too.
Of course, there needs to be some kind of emergency option for smaller children. Walkie talkies, cell phone texts or even a buzzer are great options, but mothers should make sure their children only use them in a real emergency.
It may be best for mothers to seek escape in a Woman Cave while the boyfriend or husband is home. The couple could work as a team, and when one is in the cave, the other is not, and the child always has an adult around.
4. Limit the technology.
Skip the work laptops and cell phone, and turn off the news. Overworking one’s self or watching bad TV defeats the purpose of Woman Cave relaxation. You can use these technologies, but set limits on what you will watch during your “me time.”
Creating a Woman Cave will take some planning and personalization. But finding a place to unwind will offer a new level of relaxation that can help you de-stress after a hard day’s work.
