This is why we have come up with the best steps to help you make the most of an elliptical trainer:
- Drink up before your next sweat session
It is important to drink a sufficient amount of water (about 2 cups 2-3 hours before your workout on the elliptical trainer and another cup half an hour before as well). In fact, you should also rehydrate during and after your workout as this kind of training is an intense cardiovascular exercise which may lead to a lot of sweating.
- Wear comfortable & fitting clothes
The next step is to assure that you are comfortable during your workout, you should be focusing on the training itself instead of having to readjust you clothing & having to worry about how you look. Also, investing in a good pair of running shoes should be at the top of your priority list, it will allow you to train safely and effectively!
- Master proper form on the elliptical trainer
Most of the elliptical machines have two sets of handles. One of them remaining stationary and the other moving front and back. You must hold onto the stationary handles as you position yourself, placing your first leg up on the stepper. Next, place your other leg on the other step. Before continuing, get into a steady motion, moving your legs naturally, front & back, and your arms in synchronicity, using the shifting handles for some extra upper body toning.
- Align your feet with your hips
Your feet should be exactly hips width apart and be kept straight, facing to the front (making sure your feet aren’t turned inward or outward). Very huge spaces are provided for your feet to be placed on the elliptical for this purpose. Keep your feet and hips aligned during your entire session, checking for misplacement every now and then.
- Keep your spine straight
Make sure you keep your spine erect and straight in such a way that the back is in a neutral position. This position will reduce the stress felt on the back during this workout position. In order to achieve this position, make sure you are lengthening your spine upward instead of bending forwards or backwards as you exercise. Also, keeping your core muscle strong will help support your lower back.
- Begin to pedal & keep going strong
Next, you need to start pedaling in a forward motion as only this will activate the screen given on the elliptical. You can have fun pedaling backwards too, this will engage different muscles and give you a great workout. High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to burn extra calories on the elliptical (not only during your workout but hours afterward) while keeping your workout short (yet intense)!
It is important to always do your research before you buy or use both elliptical trainer and the treadmill. To find out more about both of these cardiovascular machines, you can refer to these treadmill reviews and elliptical reviews.
