It’s been a year since I publicly declared my dislike for New Year’s resolutions.
Have I had a change of heart? Nope. Sorry I’m not sorry that I’m still not really a fan of the typical resolutions for all the reasons I stated last year. But, I have come across one of those broad goals I described that seems to want to come with me into 2015.
About a month ago, with everything going on the world and in my world [that are far too entangled to even begin to write here],
I had this overwhelming need to want to shout the words “show up”!
At the time, it may have come with some F-bomb adjectives in front of it, but that’s neither here nor there. And, let’s be honest, in this social media world we live in, I didn’t actually shout it. I put it up on Instagram:
“Last Christmas, I wrote about a post about presence > presents. This year, for many reasons, I can’t help but think deeper about what that really means. Be present. Be here, right now. Yes. THAT. But, it’s more than that. It’s being here, right now and being there, right then for others too. Have presence in their present. And all I keep coming back to with this is: SHOW UP.
Have presence in their present!
Show up physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
Show up for yourself: Care for your body, move it, feed it well. Show up to feel your feelings, to think and act true to you. Show up for your friends, family and/or loved ones: Explode with love. Practice patience. Have respect. Be reliably and consistently trustworthy. Express gratitude.
Show up for society, for humankind: Step outside your world. Be active. Participate. Stand up. Lead with kindness. Celebrate all beings. Push for justice.
Be present, have presence. Wholeheartedly and authentically. #ShowUp”
THIS. This is my New Year’s “resolution.” I want to practice showing up!
I say practice, because nothing is ever perfect. Self-improvement is a journey. Being a better human being is a journey. I will fail sometimes and that is ok. I will accept the failure and try again the next day. Or the next hour. Or the very next moment. Because, as I mentioned last New Years, you can choose to restart or reboot in any given moment.
I didn’t even wait to start this “resolution” on New Year’s Day. I started it right then. When I wrote that post. Because showing up, right then, right there meant starting right then, right there. And I’ve kept choosing to do so to the best of my ability every damn day since.
But what if others aren’t showing up for you? Well, you have some choices. It is your world, after all. You can choose to show up for them anyways [or maybe show up even more]. You can choose to inform them and ask them for what you need and help them show up better. You can choose to stop showing up for them and go your separate ways. Does that hinder your ability to continue to show up for yourself, for others or for society? Nope. And it shouldn’t. I’m a big fan of the Golden Rule and reciprocity and I think it absolutely plays a role here. Show up for others and watch them show up for you.
Call it a resolution. Call it a mantra. Call it just being a better human…
I am hanging on to this one for a while. This isn’t a fad or trend, it’s self-respect, respect for others and presence. That never goes out of style. That never loses its worth. Ever. #ShowUp
