My meditation practice began on February 8th 2015.
|That day, I realized that in order to channel my creative energy in a potent and powerful manner & manifest my deepest desires, I needed to change my ways…
Going from one extreme to the other – which in my case meant, trying to get everything done in a heartbeat while feeling stimulated, anxious & overwhelmed all at once, to burning out of fuel and feeling completely drained, exhausted & disappointed in myself – simply wasn’t my idea of leading a balanced & fruitful life. I felt like I was continuously spinning in a vicious cycle of futility, accumulating stress & anxiety while getting more and more worried about my capability of designed the lifestyle that I’d always dreamt of.
Not only that, but finding myself in a constant cycle of “high-low” stripped me away from my creativity & sense of community which are both part of my core essence desires.
|I felt like I had so much unutilized talents & value to offer, yet I was stuck in a rut.
I had a big vision, exciting dreams, I had the motivation, the support and the desire to get things done…
|What the f*ck was wrong with me, why couldn’t I express my hearts desires & really manifest my ideas into reality?
Why did I constantly feel like I wasn’t doing enough & ending up feeling overwhelmed & anxious?
The answer came to me clearly that day. Although I was no stranger to meditation growing up with both mother and step-father being Yoga teachers and practitioners, I had to come to a point where “my way” was no longer serving me to even consider committing to such practice. The idea of sitting still and emptying my mind sounded scary to me at first & I felt as if it would only result in me getting frustrated and giving up.
|Learning to work smarter, not harder!
I desperately needed a new system that would improve my focus & clarity while helping me manage and lower my anxiety and stress levels. And as Lynne Lauren mentions in her book “Simply Meditation”, “It’s (referring to meditation) the only way of feeling permanently calm & tranquil that has been available to us up until now. Other ways of calming, such as drugs and alcohol, produce only temporary escape and relief”.
Quickly enough, I let go of my self-inflicted obstacles & decided right that moment that I was going to commit to a 30 day meditation practice no matter what! And I did… and haven’t stopped a day since.
|From day one, everything started to SHIFT, DRASTICALLY – I was ready for change & change came to me like a sudden tropical rain shower, washing away everything that was no longer serving my greater purpose & fueling my entire being with love & abundant opportunity!
Meditation has become a sacred ritual to me. In an ever-changing world, it has brought me clarity and mindfulness as well as a sense of direction & deeper, genuine purpose. Declaring my core desires to the universe with powerful mantras & affirmations has propelled me in a whole new direction, slowly changing my subconscious wiring & inviting me to see the world through a different, more empowering lenses.
How to Start Meditation in 4 Easy Steps
1 – Find your WHY – your why needs to be powerful, meaningful & motivating. It needs to speak to YOU… if you want to start meditating for the simple act of being trendy, forget about it, you most probably won’t be able to stick to it long-term. My WHY was so clear and so powerful to me that I didn’t want to let a day go by without grasping the full benefits of my practice, even on those day’s where I didn’t really feel like sitting down and remaining still – my WHY always kept me going.

2 – Commit & Don’t Quit – make it your non-negotiable “me time”. Whatever you may be going through at any given day, make it a MUST to devote a few minutes to your practice, period.
3 – Make it work for YOU – like many things in life, meditation can be tailored to your own preferences. That doesn’t mean that it will always be comfortable, especially at first, but with some trial and error you can find out what kind of practice suits you best. Focusing on your breath, working on visualizations, repeating a mantra or affirmation, using guided meditations, or simply sitting still and consciously letting go of the ongoing thoughts entering your mind… are all techniques that you may like to explore.
Personally, I like to create a sacred space, dimming down the lights and lighting up a scented candle before I get started. I use my Malas (prayer beads) to repeat a Mantra (which often times changes) 108 times.

- Don’t overcomplicate it – meditation is about letting go of the over-analytical mind. Find a comfortable and quiet space, sit still, keeping your back straight & use cushioning for proper posture. Breathe naturally & begin your practice. Thoughts will come up, don’t expect them not to – instead, simply practice letting go. When your mind wanders, simply return your attention back to your breath, visualization or affirmation. You may begin your practice with just a few minutes a day, slowly adding more time as you go.
A few days into my 30-day meditation challenge, I made my first Mala necklace. Unexpectedly, the whole experience of knotting my own prayer beads was meditative in its own. Suiting, peaceful & energizing all at once, I felt submerged in the blissful Mala making world.
I became fascinated about the high vibrations and unique properties that each crystal held. Combined with the powerful practice of meditation and affirmations recitation – I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and connection. From there came the birth of“Lila & Zuri Jewelry” in collaboration with my loving & passionate mother!
